Everyday Heroes

As reported in our September 2019 newsletter, RLF Founder Chrisanne Gordon, MD, was nominated for an Every Day Heroes award in the third annual Ohio-wide campaign sponsored by the Columbus Dispatch/Dispatch Media Group, the Columbus Foundation,  the United Way of Central Ohio, the Columbus Center of Science and Industry, and CME Federal Credit Union.  Over 100 people in central Ohio were nominated for this year’s award, which focuses on people who live in the Columbus area and “quietly work to heal, unite and improve our communities.”

At a luncheon on October 1, the five finalists, including Dr. Gordon,  were called to the stage for a conversation about their work in the community.  Bradley M. Harmon, president and publisher of Dispatch Media Group, noted of the nominees, “Their dedication, compassion and commitment to a better world is just amazing.  If you see any of these quiet leaders in your community, first thank them, then lend a helping hand.”

Through the Every Day Heroes coverage, RLF’s programs to embed meditation techniques as a coping mechanism for veterans with TBI or PTSD, and efforts to bring SAD lights to Fisher House Alaska veterans, received attention.  Congratulations to the winners, to all of the nominees, and to all of the heroes we work with every day.

Support for HB 282

Ohio House Bill 282 was introduced by Ohio Representatives Adam Homes and Jeff LaRe in June in order to allow charitable organizations that currently offer instant bingo to offer the game using an electronic instant bingo device.

The Ohio Attorney General allows Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) to have bingo in their meeting halls and bars as long as they donate all of the proceeds to a charitable organization. RLF has been the proud recipient of these funds from a number of Amvets Posts, especially Post 26.

At the request of Ohio Amvets Executive Director Don McCauley, in mid-October, RLF provided written testimony in support of the bill during its hearing in the Ohio House Finance Committee.  The bill is expected to pass both chambers of the General Assembly in 2020.
